Monsoon riding is harder on a Royal Enfield than it looks
Bengaluru's monsoon months bring long stretches of wet roads, standing water, and constant humidity - conditions that don't just make riding less pleasant, they actively accelerate wear on specific parts of the bike. None of this is unique to Royal Enfields, but the classic-style engineering on many models (exposed wiring runs, drum or early-generation disc setups, chrome trim) tends to show monsoon wear faster than a fully enclosed modern commuter bike.
Chain and drivetrain corrosion
Wet roads wash away chain lubricant far faster than dry riding does, and road grit sticks to whatever lubricant remains, turning into a mild abrasive. During monsoon months, chain lubrication needs to happen noticeably more often than the usual interval - a chain left dry and gritty for a full monsoon season wears both itself and the sprockets faster than normal.
Electrical faults from water ingress
Intermittent electrical issues - a headlight that flickers, an indicator that stops working, a starter that hesitates - spike noticeably during monsoon season, and the usual cause is moisture getting into connector points rather than a genuinely failed component. Connectors that look fine when dry can still have enough corrosion buildup to cause a poor connection once they're wet again. If something electrical acts up specifically after riding in rain, that's a strong clue where to look first.
Tyre grip and tread depth matter more now
Tread depth that's borderline acceptable in dry weather can be genuinely unsafe in the wet - worn tread can't channel water away from the contact patch fast enough, which is when hydroplaning and sudden loss of grip happen. If your tyres were already due for a look before monsoon started, don't push them through the whole season.
Practical things to do before and during monsoon
A few habits make a real difference over a full monsoon season:
- Lubricate the chain more frequently than your usual dry-weather interval
- Wipe down and dry electrical connectors and the area around the headlight/tail light after riding in heavy rain
- Check tyre tread depth before monsoon starts, not partway through it
- Avoid parking in standing water for long periods - it accelerates rust on exposed metal components
- Get brakes checked - wet-weather braking distance is longer, and worn pads make that gap worse
